Kuala Lumpur (Cheras Road) Civil Cemetery, Kuala Lumpur
Located south of central Kuala Lumpur, the Cheras Road Civil Cemetery contains 156 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War, including men from the UK, India, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, East Africa and Malaysia.
In 1941 the Japanese invaded Malaya and made their way down the peninsula to Kuala Lumpur where a large base of Allied forces were stationed. The Japanese interned many of the Commonwealth troops in a temporary prisoner of war camp at Pudu Prison, an active jail up until the start of World War II. Only a few months later, the imprisoned were moved on to Changi Camp in Singapore. Those who died due to illness or injury before being transported to Changi were buried at the Cheras Road Cemetery.
Predominantly a civilian cemetery, the graves of the World War II servicemen are contained within a separate fenced off section to the other 600 or more civilian burial sites.
