Annai Poopathy Memorial, Dutch Bar Road, Batticaloa

Fifty six year old Mrs Kanapathipillai Poopathy (affectionately known as ‘Annai Poopathy’ –Mother Poopathy), mother of ten children (two of whom were LTTE cadre), fasted to death on April 19th 1988, at the instigation of the LTTE, while calling for the release of all young men who had been arrested by the SL military. A memorial to her was constructed by the LTTE, in March 2002 (during the ceasefire), in Navalady, where she was buried. It was damaged during the tsunami and was re-built as by then this area was controlled by the breakaway LTTE group headed by Karuna Amman who was allied with the SL state.
