Lalith Athulathmudali Statue, Royal College Roundabout

Lalith Athulathmudali was fatally shot on April 23rd 1993, while addressing a political gathering in Kirulapone in the lead up to the Western Provincial Council Elections in May that year. Though it was initially believed that he had been killed by the LTTE, a Presidential Commission of Inquiry suggested that President R. Premadasa as well as security personnel guarding Athulathmudali had had a hand in the killing.

A few security personnel and underworld figures were arrested and charged for this murder. Three of them were killed during prosecution raising further doubts about the investigation.
