Memorials to Malathy
Second Lieutenant Malathy (20yrs) was the first LTTE woman martyr. She was fatally wounded in one of the LTTE’s earliest battles with the IPKF, and bit on her cyanide pill, in Kopay, on October 10th 1987. A tomb/memorial to Malathy was built in Kopay as well as a statue at Kilinochchi Junction. The LTTE celebrated Women’s Awakening Day to coincide with the day Malathy was martyred. The memorial as well as the statue was demolished by the Sri Lankan Army.
