Neelan Tiruchelvam Memorial, Kynsey Terrace

Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam was an inspiring civil rights activist and lawyer and also a Member of Parliament, representing the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF). He was killed by a LTTE suicide bomber, at the top of Kynsey Terrace while on his way to work.

His memorial, designed by Chandragupta Thenuwara is also located here. The painting of the road, beside his memorial, recalling an impassioned speech he made to Parliament on the importance of ‘preserving the sanctity of life’ was an annual occurrence on his birth and death anniversaries, until they were repeatedly tarred over, at dead of night, in 2012.
